The plant collections of the Botanical Gardens are unique and of particular value. Permanent maintenance and care for these prominent collections is the duty of the Botanical Gardens staff and personnel. It is a difficult and responsible job requiring devotion, attention, and skill with the aim of meeting the highest quality standards.
In the light of this, our horticultural apprenticeship program offers a real challenge for those who are determined to learning their profession in the settings of a botanical garden. Our professional training program is aimed at offering an education leading up to the graduation of highly skilled horticulturists, having learned to effectively and reliably nurse and maintain delicate plant collections of the sort cultivated in botanical gardens.
Horticulturist – A Profession for "Life"
A motto, particularly applying to the Botanical Gardens. Presently our apprenticeship program is open to 15 applicants for horticulture (ornamental plants). Additionally we are accepting applications for training of 3 horticultural workers.
The training period generally lasts 3 years, of which 12 months are spent "on the economy" in a commercially operating horticultural enterprise (arrangement assisted by the Botanical Gardens).
Not only are our apprentices learning about ornamental plant production and but through the diverse tasks at our institution they simultaneously are picking up aspects of seed production, pomology (fruit production), tree nursing, vegetable production, gardening and lanscaping, etc.
The horticultural apprenticeship program is supervised by Rolf Dusberger, Master of Horticulture , who gladly would answer your questions.
